The Salt Showdown
“All human beings need salt on a daily basis for optimal health and virtually no one has any kind of allergy or sensitivity to salt”. - Dr. Ken Berry MD
The Salt Showdown
Throw Out Your Table Salt. Right Now.
Have you thrown out your table salt yet?
That little salt shaker sitting on your kitchen counter doing absolutely nothing for you needs to go in the trash. Right now. Today.
I'm serious. Go get it. Throw it out.
You are saying goodbye to anti-caking agents, additives, and in most cases dextrose, which is sugar. All of this hiding inside what you thought was just salt. That white cylinder sitting next to your stove is not food. It is a processed industrial product that has been stripped of everything your body actually needs and then has chemicals added back in to keep it from clumping.
Morton's has been sitting in American kitchens for over 100 years and it has done more harm than good.
Toss it.
Your Body Needs MORE Salt on Carnivore. Not Less.
Here is what nobody tells you when you go Carnivore.
Your body needs more salt. Not less. A lot more. But it has to be high quality salt and that distinction matters more than most people realize.
Here is why.
When you cut carbohydrates, your insulin drops. That is the whole point. That is what you came here for. But when insulin drops, your kidneys start flushing sodium at a much faster rate than they did when you were eating a standard diet. Your body is literally excreting salt faster than you can replace it.
The headaches are not from cutting carbs. The fatigue is not from eating too much meat. The brain fog, the leg cramps that wake you up at 3am, the feeling that this whole thing is making you feel worse instead of better. That is almost always a salt problem. Your body is running low on sodium and telling you about it in the loudest way it can.
Now let me be clear. I am not a doctor. I am a “fat kid from Iowa” who drastically changed his life, has been living Carnivore for a year, lost 125 pounds, fixed his body, and wants to share what actually works. Take that for what it is worth. I got my own bloodwork done, walked in and ordered my own labs, and the results came back perfect. So when I tell you salt is not optional on this protocol, I am telling you from lived experience, not a textbook.
Salt is how your body regulates fluid balance. It fires nerve signals. It contracts muscles. It maintains blood pressure. Without enough of it, nothing works right. You cannot just cut sodium and expect to feel good on Carnivore. The two things are incompatible.
The fix is simple. Eat more salt. However the key is to eat a high quality salt preferably from your continent.
Not All Salt Is the Same
This is the part that matters.
Table salt is sodium chloride. That is it. Sodium and chloride stripped clean during processing, with the natural minerals removed, and then additives loaded back in to make it shelf-stable and free-flowing. Some versions contain dextrose, which is a form of sugar, just to keep the iodine from breaking down. You are putting sugar in your salt shaker and calling it a seasoning.
Quality salt is a different product entirely. Sodium chloride plus over 60 trace minerals your body needs: magnesium, potassium, calcium, iron, zinc, copper, and more. These minerals were not added in a lab. They were there naturally, from the source, before any processing touched them. The difference between table salt and a quality unrefined salt is not subtle. One is a stripped industrial product. The other is actual food.
Here are the three salts I use and trust.
Pink Himalayan Salt
Mined from ancient salt deposits in Pakistan, formed hundreds of millions of years before modern pollution existed. This salt has been sitting underground in a pristine deposit since long before humans were burning coal or dumping chemicals in the ocean. The pink color comes from iron oxide and the trace minerals naturally present in the deposit.
Pink Himalayan salt comes from ancient oceans, formed long before modern toxins, and contains a full spectrum of trace minerals. It is one of the most well-known quality salts for good reason and it is widely available.
Source: Khewra Salt Mine, Pakistan
Harvested: Mined by hand, often using traditional methods
Mineral Content: 80+ natural minerals including magnesium, calcium, iron, potassium
Purity: Sealed in rock for over 250 million years = free from modern toxins
Use: Cooking, bath soaks, mineral drinks, and electrolyte formulas
💧 Hydration Advantage: Contains the full spectrum of minerals needed for optimal cellular hydration
One important note: buy from a reputable brand. Pink Himalayan is often counterfeited and dyed pink, so make sure you are using a quality brand. There are dozens of mines and quality varies significantly depending on who is sourcing and processing it. When you find a brand you trust, stick with it.
Redmond Real Salt
Redmond Real Salt is mined from an ancient sea bed in Redmond, Utah and is the most economical option among the top unrefined salts. It has never been exposed to modern pollution, plastics, or heavy metals because it has been sealed underground since before any of that existed.
Source: Ancient seabed in Utah, USA
Harvested: Mined, not evaporated
Minerals: 60+ natural minerals
Purity: Sealed from environmental toxins
Form: Reddish-pink, unrefined
💧 Hydration Use: Excellent for hydration and wellness
🥈 Top alternative to Pink Himalayan Salt
Real Salt is solar-powered and USA-made, and is typically half the cost of imported alternatives. You are not paying for it to ship 7,000 miles from Pakistan. You are getting an American-made product from a company that controls the entire process from mine to shelf.
Real Salt has a slightly sweeter taste compared to Himalayan, which tends toward a more earthy flavor. It is versatile, it dissolves well, it works for cooking and for eating straight on your meat. This is one of the salts sitting on my counter right now.
Celtic Sea Salt
Harvested from the coast of Brittany, France using traditional hand-harvesting methods. Celtic sea salt comes from the current ocean and is harvested by hand from clay-lined pools, left unprocessed with its trace minerals intact. The clay pools give it its distinctive gray color.
The flavor is briny, bold, and unlike anything else. Celtic Salt has a slightly moist texture and an oceanic taste that adds a unique dimension to dishes. It is favoured by chefs as a coarse finishing salt.
Source: Brittany, France
Harvested: Hand-raked from clay-lined salt ponds using wooden tools
Mineral Content: Moist, rich in magnesium
Purity: Very natural, but some ocean exposure
Texture: Grey and slightly wet due to seawater retention
💧 Good for hydration if used fresh — but moisture can make it clump in powders
The one thing to be aware of: Celtic salt comes from current ocean water, which means it is more exposed to the modern environment than ancient deposits, including potential exposure to mercury, lead, plastic, and petroleum toxins that ancient seas never experienced. That does not make it a bad salt. It is still a massive upgrade over anything in a blue cardboard cylinder. If source purity is your top priority, then go with one of the other salt options.
All three salts are unrefined with trace minerals that beat iodized table salt without question. The choice between them comes down to source purity and taste preference more than any significant mineral difference.
Any one of these three is a win. Pick one, make the switch and do not overthink it.
What to Do With Your Salt
Salt your meat. Salt your eggs. Salt everything you cook.
If you have been holding back on salt because someone told you it was dangerous for your blood pressure, understand that the research behind that advice was done on people eating a standard high-carb diet. On Carnivore and low-carb eating, your kidneys handle sodium completely differently. The rules change when you change the fuel source.
I also drink an electrolyte salt blend first thing every morning before I eat anything else. Sodium is the first thing my body gets. I will most more on my specific water routie later, so for now: do not wait until you have a headache or a leg cramp at 3am to take salt seriously. Be proactive about it.
Salt your food generously. Use real salt. Use it every day, multiple times a day, without guilt.
The fear of salt was sold to you by the same people who sold you the low-fat lie. And you already know how that turned out.
The Simple Swap That Changes Everything
You do not need to order anything fancy online or spend a lot of money to make this switch.
Redmond Real Salt is in most health food stores and is widely available on Amazon. Check it out here. It is priced at roughly half the cost of Himalayan salt. A bag lasts a long time. This is not an expensive change.
Pink Himalayan salt is in almost every grocery store now. Find a brand with a short ingredient list. Salt. That is it. Nothing else should be on that label.
Celtic Sea Salt is a little harder to find in standard grocery stores but is easy to order online. If you want a finishing salt with a bold, briny kick, this is the one.
Here is the bottom line on all three: they share the same type and number of meaningful trace minerals. There is not a bad salt among these three options as long as you purchase from the right sources. You are not choosing between good and better. You are choosing between three good options and one terrible one. The terrible one is the white cylinder you are throwing out right now.
Real Salt. Real Minerals. Real Results.
This is one of those changes that sounds small and turns out to matter more than you expected.
The headaches go away. The cramps stop. The brain fog lifts. Not because you did something complicated. Because you gave your body the sodium and trace minerals it needs to function correctly, from a source that is actually food instead of a processed industrial product with a 100-year-old brand on the label.
Throw out the Morton's.
Put Redmond, Himalayan, or Celtic on your counter instead.
Your body will tell you the difference.
